The problem

A managing director asked for an ESG reporting asset that could work across client platforms: help enterprises fill sustainability data faster and pass GRI/ESRS-aligned compliance without rebuilding the plumbing each cycle. Most reporting efforts fail not on ambition but on data governance: no owners, no lineage, no consistent methodology.

My role

Designer of the data model and its governance layer, as part of a sustainability & analytics team; the asset was pitched onward to a European partner for client rollout.

Approach
  • Modeled the metric estate first: clusters of related metrics (energy, refrigerants, purchased electricity, travel, purchased goods) each mapped to its GRI disclosure and ESRS datapoint
  • Assigned every cluster a domain owner and a named steward role; tracked completeness, timeliness, and accuracy as scored quality dimensions
  • Tagged each Scope 3 category with its calculation methodology (spend-based for low-materiality categories, activity-based for hot ones, supplier-specific where data existed), following the GHG Protocol Scope 3 Standard
What shipped
  • A Scope 1–3 environmental data model covering 384 metrics, GRI/ESRS-aligned, with lineage from source system to disclosure line
  • Stewardship cadence: monthly quality-scorecard reviews with domain owners
Outcomes
  • Reporting time cut by 25%, moving analyst hours from data wrangling to actual decarbonization analysis
  • Restatement policy and version history baked into the model, anticipating the shift toward audit-grade (reasonable) assurance
