Impact that Matters: Reflections on Deloitte's Impact Day 2023
Originally published on LinkedIn · 2 December 2023In this addition to my Sustainability series, I share my experience as a Cluster Lead during Deloitte's Impact Day 2023, specifically for the Grow Green Plantation Drive. This article offers a behind-the-scenes look at our concerted efforts in community service, the organizational strategies that drove our success, and the personal and collective learnings derived from this event.
About Deloitte USI's Impact Day
Last week was particularly special for all of us at Deloitte USI. We organized our annual Impact Day for community service in India, marking my first-ever experience of this inspiring event. Moving away from our routine work, we devoted an entire day to CSR activities.
On this day, Deloitte and its professionals support local communities through various means including volunteering, workplace giving, pro bono services, social-impact innovation, and nonprofit board service. This combined effort leverages the collective power of communities and nonprofits to achieve lasting impact.
Months of preparation, extra hours, and considerable effort culminate in a range of activities. Impact Day serves as a powerful reminder of the positive change Deloitte's flagship program fosters, focusing annually on Education, Empowerment, Sustainability, Healthcare, and Animal Welfare. Professionals actively engage, both in-person and virtually, to make a meaningful impact in the community.
My Contribution on the Impact Day
I got an opportunity to contribute as a Cluster Lead (CL) for the Grow Green Plantation Drive at Keshavaram, Telangana. In collaboration with the NGO United Way, approximately 1000 Deloitte professionals volunteered to plant over 5000 saplings. The CL's main role was to ensure smooth coordination and effective participation of the volunteers, that ultimately aimed to contribute to environmental sustainability.
However, my role involved a little more than just planting saplings and volunteer management. I promoted car-pooling among volunteers and was also the Greening SPOC ensuring the cleanliness. To emphasize on "carpooling-effects", I made the carbon calculations assuming all individuals travel separately and presented the same to our sustainability leadership in Hyderabad and Mumbai. This helped boost our carpooling efforts, with over 180 professionals pooling vehicles finally, markedly reducing our carbon footprint and making the campaign greener.
Learnings & Takeaways
Preparation is Key: Planning the logistics way in advance is critical for smooth operations. For instance, we began preparations three months before the event. However, some travel booking and logistical issues arose, presenting challenges in arranging pooled transport for some.
Preparation for Known-Unknowns: Always anticipate unexpected challenges and have contingency plans. The ability to make last-minute adjustments is crucial for the success of any large-scale event.
Structure and Hierarchy: A clear organizational structure is essential for coordination and effectiveness. The Location, Thread, Cluster classification proved effective in managing a large number of volunteers.
Externalities and Emission Calculations: Understanding the environmental impact of our actions, like travel carbon footprint calculations, is key to genuinely green initiatives. For example, we considered the externalities of volunteers traveling to the plantation sites and promoted car-pooling among volunteers.
Quantify the Impact: Empirical measurement of initiatives' impact, such as carbon savings from carpooling, offers valuable insights. I did the carbon footprint calculations and presented to the leadership in Hyderabad & Mumbai. Later we encouraged carpooling by creating excel sheets and pooling forms for the volunteers, etc.
Volunteer Engagement: Clear, consistent communication is vital in managing a large team and aligning everyone with objectives and next steps. Simple interventions like creating Teams and WhatsApp groups significantly enhanced communication.
Collective Impact: Small, individual efforts can combine to create significant impact. Every sapling mattered. The opposite is also true, just a small litter can lead to pile-up of a lot of garbage later.
Extra Mile for Success: Sometimes, going beyond the call of duty, such as following up to ensure presence and query resolution, is necessary. Engaging Activity by the NGO United Way to identify the Sapling species was a fun way to involve the community and leave their mark on the contribution they made.
Inclusivity and Team Spirit: Deloitte's non-hierarchical approach in role assignment fosters equality and camaraderie among team members. The volunteers I had to manage were across verticals and some at very senior positions.
In conclusion, contributing to Impact Day 2023 was immensely fulfilling for me. Interacting with fellow volunteers, facilitating maximum participation, observing the carpooling in action, and seeing the tangible results of our collective efforts was incredibly rewarding. This experience underscored the value of each individual's contribution towards a larger goal. I express my gratitude to the Sustainability leaders, organizers and my colleagues, including Alpesh Makwana, Chinnam Leena Raj, Anand Mudunuri, Bala Rao, Sweta Saju, Priya, Ganesh Thatipamula, Syed Hussain, and others, who made this event a success.
I encourage you to share your experience if you participated in Impact Day or similar activity recently. How have you contributed to making an impact that matters? Inspire others on their journey towards sustainability.
